Excerpts from an interview with Satnam Matharu, (…) Satnam Matharu: In July 2004 we launched our ‘Code of Ethics’. Basically it crystallized many of the practises which we already had at the channel, but we wanted to put it in a form that was formalized both for ourselves at the channel and also for the public in order to make it transparent what we were doing here at Al Jazeera. So here you have the ’Code of Ethics’ which states that “being a globally oriented media service, Aljazeera shall determinedly adopt the following code of ethics in pursuance of the vision and mission it has set for itself.” And the following ten points are all of the key code of ethics. Built on that is our ’Code of Conduct’, which every journalist reads and must abide by. As with every professional organization we expect our journalists to obey by the ’Code of Ethics’ and you know, we have a great history I think and a great legacy in, you know of leading edge journalism built on this ‘Code of Ethics’ and also on our ‘Code of Conduct’. Satnam Matharu: Now we’ll go over the new newsroom which we launched in the middle of last year, 2005. As you see the new newsroom is expanded and much more larger with state of the art technology, it’s really quite a beautiful newsroom. (…) Satnam Matharu: This is the new newsroom, as you can see, it is huge in comparison. I don’t think, if Hosni Mubarak were here he would call it a “small matchbox“ anymore. (…) So the new studio is extremely flexible in terms of presenting news. All of these sidebanners can change colours so that for the particular show it’s got a purple field or it’s got a green field, we can change the light for the whole place. Everything is computerized, all of the cameras as well as all the lighting. So with these state of the art studios, we continue to serve our audience with the best look and also the best content when it comes to news. (
